2019 Miami Open - Event Recap

The Miami Open came to a dramatic conclusion this past weekend! The 35th tournament, sponsored by Itau Unibanco, showcased the best tennis in the world, on both the ATP and the WTA side, and record crowds were treated to incredible, season-high moments.

This year, the tournament was held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Over $500 million was spent in additions and renovations to transform the stadium to accommodate the event. This included 20 permanent tournament and practice courts, among other premium amenities. The men's side of the draw saw a host of early round upsets including soon-to-be retired David Ferrer turning back the clock to beat #2 seed Alex Zverev in the round of 64, R. Bautista Agut beating #1 seed Novak Djokovic in the round of 16, and JTCC alum Frances Tiafoe beating in-form David Ferrer before making a run to the quarterfinals and then overpowering 18 seed D. Goffin in the round of 16. In the final Roger Federer met last year’s winner John Isner, and made relatively easy work of the American, winning 6-1, 6-4. On the women's side, there was equal excitement and upsets with 2-time grand slam champion and #1 seed Naomi Osaka losing in the third round, recent Indian Wells Champion Bianca Andreescu withdrawing during her round of 16 match, and Chinese player Q. Wang beating #2 seed Simona Halep. In the final, Australian Ashleigh Barty met favorite Karolina Plíšková and, in an upset, the Australian won a hard fought match 7-6, 6-3. In the men's doubles, the Bryan Brothers won their 118 tour-level doubles title and sixth Miami Open title together as a team, and in the women's doubles, Aryna Sabalenka & Elise Mertens were victorious over veteran Sam Stosur & Zhang Shuai 7-6, 6-2.
